      <image:title>Slideshow - Washegenesh</image:title>
<image:caption>WASHEGENESH WAS THE GRANDSON OF CHIEF ESHANOOTTIE from the Pheasant Rump Community. In his youth, during the Riel Conflict, he had voted to kill the Indian Agent Charles Lawford, who was doing all in his power to keep the Moose Mountain Indians from joining Riel. In later years, however, Washegenesh became a very good friend of Charles Lawford. Charles’ granddaughters, Margaret and Marion, recollected that Washegenesh and his family would set up their tipi in Lawford’s yard in the summertime and stay for a week or two. He and their grandfather would sit by his tipi where they would share a pipe. Washegenesh would take out his leather copy of the treaty so that Lawford could read it to him and the two of them would spend many hours discussing the terms of the treaty. As a token of their friendship Washegenesh gave Charles this picture.</image:caption>
